1924-S Peace Dollar AU
The 1924-S Peace Dollar stands as a remarkable artifact from a brief era of American silver coinage. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of 90 percent pure silver. The series itself was produced from 1921 to 1928, with a brief revival in 1934 and 1935, marking the final chapter for circulating United States silver dollars. Born from an open design competition, the coin features the artwork of Anthony de Francisci. The front displays a left-profile portrait of Liberty wearing a crown of sharp light rays, a depiction inspired by the Statue of Liberty. Legible inscriptions on this side include the word LIBERTY and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, rendered with a classic V in place of the U. The reverse side presents a powerful symbol of tranquility, showing a bald eagle resting on a mountain crag while holding an olive branch. This imagery was specifically chosen to represent the global peace established after World War I. The word PEACE is inscribed at the base, beneath the eagle and the denomination of ONE DOLLAR.
