1925-1932 South Africa Gold Sovereign George V BU

0.2354 troy oz .9167 Brilliant Unc

During a transitional period in the interwar years, the production of classic gold sovereigns shifted away from Great Britain. While the home mint halted its output of these coins after 1925, the Pretoria Mint in South Africa stepped in to continue the tradition, striking these pieces from 1925 through 1932. This specific era represents the only time South Africa issued its own sovereigns, making them a distinct chapter in global numismatic history. Struck in 0.9167 fine gold with a precious metal weight of 0.2354 troy ounces, each coin survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The obverse features the left-facing portrait of King George V, surrounded by his Latin royal titles. The reverse displays the legendary depiction of Saint George on horseback, defeating a dragon, a classic masterpiece created by the artist Benedetto Pistrucci. These Pretoria-minted coins carry the 'SA' mint mark, identifying their unique South African origin.
