1925-D $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle AU
The 1925 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional coinage methods. Struck at the Denver Mint, this two and a half dollar piece features an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This distinctive style gives the coin a unique depth and tactile quality that sets it apart from almost all other American currency. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Liberty is depicted wearing a traditional Native American headdress. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle the profile, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the 1925 year of issue. The reverse displays a proud bald eagle perched upon a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the face value of 2 1/2 DOLLARS. The Denver mint mark, a small D, is also visible on this side. This coin was designed by Bela Lyon Pratt and struck in 90 percent pure gold, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of the precious metal. With a total mintage of 578,000 pieces, this specific example survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of its unusual sunken relief.
