In 1925, a special celebration in Minneapolis, Minnesota, marked a century since Norwegian pioneers arrived in the state. To commemorate this milestone, the United States Mint in Philadelphia struck an unusual, eight-sided silver piece. While originally intended to serve as a commemorative half dollar, it was ultimately issued as an official medal authorized by the U.S. Congress. This particular variety is the thick version, which had a total production of 33,765 pieces, compared to a much smaller run of just 6,000 thin medals. The design of this octagonal medal, sculpted by artist James Earle Fraser, is rich with historical imagery. The front of the medal showcases a Viking leader prepared for battle, complete with a horned helmet, a shield, a sword, and a dagger. The bold lettering around the figure highlights the Norse-American Centennial from 1825 to 1925. On the reverse, a traditional Viking ship sails across the center. The inscriptions confirm the congressional authorization and note the year A.D. 1000, representing the approximate era of the Vinland settlement. Fraser also left his mark on the reverse, signing the piece with the Latin phrase OPUS FRASER, indicating it was his work. Struck from 0.5663 troy ounces of silver, this piece stands out for its bold geometric shape and detailed artistry.
