1925-SA South Africa Gold 1/2 Sovereign BU

0.1177 troy oz .9167 1925 Brilliant Unc

In 1925, the Pretoria Branch Mint struck a gold coin that would occupy a unique place in numismatic history. This half sovereign represents the only time South Africa ever issued this specific denomination, making it a singular entry in the nation's coinage legacy. Struck in 0.9167 fine gold with an actual gold content of 0.1177 troy ounces, this piece was part of a limited mintage of 946,615 coins. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of King George V. Surrounding the royal likeness are the Latin inscriptions confirming his title as King of Great Britain. The details remain sharp and clear, preserved in brilliant uncirculated condition. On the reverse, the coin displays the legendary scene of Saint George on horseback, defeating a dragon. This iconic imagery, originally created by Benedetto Pistrucci, is accompanied by the year 1925. The Pretoria mint mark, SA, is also present on this side, anchoring this classic British design to its South African origin.
