1926 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle MS-63 PCGS

0.1209 troy oz .900 1926 PCGS

The 1926 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating chapter in United States coinage, notable for its distinctive incuse design where the details are sunken into the coin's surface rather than raised above it. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this issue does not bear a mint mark, distinguishing it from those produced at branch facilities. With a total mintage of 446,000 pieces, each coin contains 0.1209 troy ounces of gold, minted with a purity of 0.900. On the obverse, the design showcases a portrait of Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American headdress. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the word LIBERTY inscribed along the top curve and the date 1926 positioned at the bottom. The artist Bela Lyon Pratt created this striking aesthetic, which departed dramatically from traditional coin designs of the era. The reverse of the coin is dominated by a majestic bald eagle standing proudly. Surrounding the national bird are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the legendary mottoes E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, and the face value of two and a half dollars. This particular specimen has been certified in Mint State 63 (MS-63) condition, preserving the intricate details of Pratt's innovative work for modern observers to appreciate.
