The 1926 Buffalo nickel stands as a classic example of American coinage, showcasing a design that departs from traditional allegorical figures to celebrate the heritage of the American West. Sculpted by James Earle Fraser, the coin presents a realistic and sensitive portrait of an American Indian on its obverse, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the date of issue. On the reverse, a magnificent bison stands poised on a raised mound of earth. This side of the coin bears the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM alongside the denomination of FIVE CENTS. Because this particular issue was produced at the Philadelphia Mint, it does not display a mint mark, leaving the space below the bison clean and uncluttered. This specimen has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine textures of the native headdress and the rugged coat of the bison.
