The 1926 ten-cent piece stands as a remarkable survivor from the decade of the Roaring Twenties. Struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.0715 troy ounces, this coin is a prime representative of the beloved Mercury Dime series. Despite its popular nickname, the coin does not actually depict the Roman messenger god, but rather a youthful personification of Liberty. On the obverse, Liberty is shown wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a design element intended to symbolize freedom of thought. This side also bears the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 1926 date of manufacture. The design was created by the noted artist Adolph Weinman, who brought a fresh, classical aesthetic to American coinage during the early twentieth century. The reverse of the coin presents a powerful contrast of themes, displaying a traditional Roman fasces alongside a leafy olive branch. These symbols were chosen to represent the nation's readiness for defense coupled with a strong desire for peace. The inscriptions on this side include the country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the denomination ONE DIME, and the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM. This particular specimen has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of Weinman's intricate engraving.
