In 1926, the Pretoria Branch Mint struck a remarkable gold coin that holds a singular place in numismatic history. This half sovereign represents the only year of its denomination ever produced by South Africa, making it an incredibly distinctive find for those exploring twentieth-century coinage. Crafted from 0.9167 fine gold, the coin contains 0.1177 troy ounces of precious metal. Its obverse features the left-facing portrait of King George V, surrounded by the Latin inscription GEORGIVS V BRITT OMN REX. This royal profile connects the coin directly to the global reach of the British Empire during the early decades of the twentieth century. The reverse displays the classic, dynamic scene of Saint George on horseback, brandishing a sword to slay a dragon. This legendary imagery was originally conceived by the renowned artist Benedetto Pistrucci. Positioned just above the ground line on this side is the "SA" mint mark, indicating its origin at the Pretoria facility. Out of a mintage of 806,540 pieces, this specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of both the royal portrait and the legendary battle scene.
