1926-SA South Africa Gold 1/2 Sovereign BU
In 1926, the Pretoria Branch Mint in South Africa struck a limited run of gold half sovereigns, marking the only time this specific denomination was ever issued by the nation. Out of a mintage of 806,540 pieces, these coins survive today in brilliant uncirculated condition, offering a fascinating window into the country's early twentieth-century minting history. Each coin is struck from 0.9167 fine gold, containing 0.1177 troy ounces of pure precious metal. The obverse of the coin displays the left-facing portrait of King George V, surrounded by the Latin inscription denoting his royal title. The reverse features one of the most famous motifs in numismatic history: Benedetto Pistrucci's classic depiction of Saint George on horseback, brandishing a sword to slay a mythical dragon. The year 1926 is clearly inscribed at the bottom of this dramatic scene, cementing this coin's place as a singular South African treasure.
