1927 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle MS-62 PCGS
The 1927 gold quarter eagle stands out as a remarkable example of American coinage, notable for its highly unusual incuse design. Unlike traditional coins where the details are raised above the surface, the imagery on this two and a half dollar gold piece is sunken directly into the metal. This innovative technique, crafted by designer Bela Lyon Pratt, gives the coin a distinctively flat profile while protecting the intricate details of the artwork from excessive wear. On the obverse, a strong, masculine representation of Liberty is depicted wearing a traditional feathered headdress. This central figure is surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the word LIBERTY positioned along the top rim and the date 1927 inscribed below. The initials B.C.P. are also visible, marking the designer's signature on the coin's face. The reverse features a powerful bald eagle standing proudly. The bird is encircled by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination of 2 1/2 DOLLARS. The traditional national mottos, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, are also elegantly integrated into the background field. Struck at the Philadelphia mint, this specific coin does not bear a mint mark, which is characteristic of the facility's production for this issue. It has been certified in Mint State 62 (MS-62) condition, preserving the original luster of its 90 percent pure gold composition, which contains exactly 0.1209 troy ounces of precious metal.
