1927 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle MS-64 NGC
The 1927 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional coinage methods. Unlike most coins with raised features, this two and a half dollar piece employs an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken directly into the flat gold surface. This unusual technique gives the coin a distinctively flat profile and a highly tactile quality that sets it apart from other American issues of the era. On the obverse, a Native American figure wearing a traditional feathered headdress faces left, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The word LIBERTY is inscribed along the top edge, with the 1927 date positioned below the bust. The initials B.L.P. are also visible, honoring the artist Bela Lyon Pratt who created the design. This series was struck by the Philadelphia Mint between the years 1908 and 1929. The reverse displays a proud bald eagle standing on a bundle of arrows wrapped in an olive branch. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the upper rim, with the denomination of 2 1/2 DOLLARS at the bottom. The traditional mottos, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, are carefully placed in the open fields surrounding the eagle. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, this coin contains 0.12094 troy ounces of precious metal and has been certified in Mint State 64 condition.
