Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this ten-cent piece from 1927 represents a classic era of United States coinage. Crafted from 90% silver, the coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. It survives today in a Very Fine state of preservation, displaying the moderate wear of a coin that circulated during the interwar years while retaining its essential design details. The obverse features a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a traditional Phrygian cap adorned with wings, a design element intended to symbolize freedom of thought. This striking imagery led to the popular, though technically inaccurate, nickname of the Mercury Dime. Legible inscriptions on this side include the word LIBERTY, the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 1927 date of manufacture. On the reverse, the central motifs are a fasces, representing strength and unity, and an olive branch, symbolizing peace. The legendary S mint mark is visible, identifying its origin in San Francisco. Surrounding these central symbols are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, and the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM.
