The 1928 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional coinage methods. Unlike typical coins with raised features, this two and a half dollar gold piece utilizes an incuse design, meaning the details are pressed deep into the flat surface. This innovative approach gives the coin a distinct, flat profile while protecting the intricate details of the artwork from wear. On the obverse, a Native American figure wearing a traditional feathered headdress is depicted in profile. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, alongside the word LIBERTY and the 1928 release year. The reverse showcases a standing bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows, wrapped in an olive branch. The surrounding inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the national mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, and the face value of two and a half dollars. Crafted by Bela Lyon Pratt, this series was struck by the Philadelphia Mint between the years 1908 and 1929. This specific 1928 issue contains 0.12094 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 90 percent. It has been certified by professional graders as Mint State 61 (MS-61), preserving a remarkable example of early twentieth-century American minting artistry.
