1928 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle XF
The 1928 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional coinage methods. Minted in Philadelphia, this two and a half dollar piece is distinguished by its incuse design, meaning the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This innovative technique, used on this series from 1908 to 1929, gives the coin a unique depth and texture that sets it apart from almost all other United States currency. On the obverse, the design features a portrait of Liberty wearing a traditional feathered headdress, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed along the top edge, with the 1928 date positioned at the bottom. The designer's initials, "BLP" for Bela Lyon Pratt, are also visible just above the date. The reverse of the coin showcases a proud bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows and holding an olive branch. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "2 1/2 DOLLARS". The traditional mottos "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are also integrated into the field. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, this coin contains 0.12094 troy ounces of precious metal and represents one of the final years of this remarkable design series.
