The 1928-D Mercury Dime is a fascinating example of early twentieth-century American coinage. Despite its common nickname, the coin actually portrays a youthful personification of Liberty on its obverse, adorned with a winged Phrygian cap. This distinct headwear was intended to represent freedom of thought, though it frequently caused the public to mistake the figure for the Roman messenger god, Mercury.
