1928-S Buffalo Nickel XF
The 1928 five-cent piece struck at the San Francisco Mint showcases one of the most celebrated designs in United States coinage. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, this copper-nickel coin presents a powerful portrait of a Native American chieftain on the obverse, facing right. The word LIBERTY is inscribed along the upper right edge, with the year 1928 positioned at the lower left near the base of the neck. On the reverse, a magnificent American bison stands on a raised mound, capturing the spirit of the Western frontier. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is visible above the animal's back, while the denomination FIVE CENTS is boldly displayed at the bottom. Below the denomination, the S mint mark denotes its origin from the San Francisco facility. This particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the crisp textures of the hair, feathers, and animal fur that make this series a favorite among enthusiasts.
