Minted in Philadelphia, this 2.50 dollar piece contains 0.1209 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. It stands out immediately because of its unusual incuse design, meaning the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This innovative technique, crafted by designer Bela Lyon Pratt, was used on these quarter eagles from 1908 to 1929. The obverse features a profile of Liberty wearing a traditional Native American headdress, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies.
