The 1929 Buffalo nickel is a classic piece of United States coinage, minted during an era of transition. This five-cent piece, struck at the Denver Mint, displays the distinctive 'D' mint mark on its reverse. Rendered in a Fine grade, the coin shows honest wear from its time in circulation, yet it retains the essential details of its iconic, rugged artwork. On the obverse, a powerful right-facing portrait of a Native American dominates the design. The word LIBERTY is inscribed along the upper right edge, and the year 1929 is clearly struck at the base of the neck. This design, created by James Earle Fraser, departs from traditional allegorical figures to present a highly realistic and uniquely American image. The reverse features a magnificent American bison, or buffalo, standing on a raised mound. Above the animal, the legend reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, accompanied by the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Below the mound, the denomination is spelled out as FIVE CENTS, with the Denver 'D' mint mark positioned just underneath, marking its origin from the Colorado facility.
