1931-D Mercury Dime Fine
In 1931, the Denver Mint produced a ten-cent piece that remains a captivating example of early twentieth-century American coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal weight of 0.0715 troy ounces, this coin is widely recognized by its popular series name, the Mercury Dime. This particular piece survives in Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that once circulated through the hands of everyday Americans during a challenging era in the nation's history. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse of the coin presents a youthful portrait of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap adorned with wings, a striking visual element intended to symbolize freedom of thought. The design was so reminiscent of the Roman messenger god that the public quickly dubbed the issue the Mercury Dime, a nickname that has endured for nearly a century. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions for liberty and the national motto, alongside the 1931 date. The reverse of the coin offers a contrasting blend of themes, displaying a traditional Roman fasces alongside an olive branch. The fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an ax, represents strength and unity, while the leafy olive branch signifies a desire for peace. These powerful symbols are framed by the inscriptions denoting the United States of America and the ten-cent denomination, with the Denver 'D' mint mark indicating its origin.
