The 1931-D Mercury Dime stands as a classic example of early twentieth-century United States coinage. Struck at the Denver Mint, this ten-cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. Despite its name, the coin does not actually depict the Roman messenger god Mercury, but rather a youthful representation of Liberty on its obverse. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse features Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom of thought. The legend "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed alongside the 1931 date. On the reverse, the design presents a fasces, an ancient symbol of authority and unity, entwined with an olive branch representing peace. The inscriptions on this side include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM". This particular specimen is preserved in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation during the Great Depression era.
