The 1931 ten cent piece, widely known as the Mercury Dime, is a fascinating example of early twentieth century American coinage. Despite its popular nickname, the coin does not actually depict the Roman messenger god, but rather a youthful representation of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap on its obverse. This distinctive headwear was intended to symbolize freedom of thought. On the reverse, the design shifts to powerful classical imagery. It features a fasces, a traditional Roman symbol consisting of a bundle of rods bound around an axe, which is closely intertwined with an olive branch. This pairing represents a dual message of strength and peace. The inscriptions on the coin include the famous national mottoes, with "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the obverse and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on the reverse, alongside the name of the issuing nation.
