1934 Buffalo Nickel XF
The 1934 five-cent piece, commonly known as the Buffalo Nickel, stands as a classic example of American coinage design. Created by James Earle Fraser, this issue from the Philadelphia Mint showcases a highly detailed and realistic portrayal of early American themes. This particular coin is preserved in Extra Fine condition, allowing observers to appreciate the fine details of its iconic artwork. On the obverse, a dignified profile of a Native American man faces right. The design seamlessly integrates the word LIBERTY along the upper right edge, with the year 1934 clearly struck at the bottom left of the portrait. Fraser's design was celebrated for capturing a rugged, authentic representation of indigenous peoples, moving away from idealized European depictions. The reverse of the coin features a massive American bison, often referred to as a buffalo, standing on a raised mound of earth. The inscriptions include the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above the animal's back, while the denomination FIVE CENTS is boldly displayed below the mound. The textured fur of the bison and the strength of its stance make this reverse one of the most memorable in the history of United States currency.
