1934 Mercury Dime XF

0.0715 troy oz .900 1934 Extra Fine

The 10 cent piece minted in 1934 stands as a beautiful example of early twentieth-century American coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Known widely as the Mercury Dime, the series is celebrated for its elegant and symbolic imagery, which remains highly detailed on this Extra Fine specimen. On the obverse, a youthful personification of Liberty is depicted wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This headgear, which historically symbolized freedom of thought, led many to mistake the figure for the Roman messenger god Mercury, giving the coin its popular nickname. The legend "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed alongside the 1934 date. The reverse side displays a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an ax, positioned next to an olive branch. These contrasting symbols represent strength and readiness for defense alongside a desire for peace. The inscriptions on this side include the national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the denomination "ONE DIME," all framed by the country name, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
