The 1935 five-cent piece from the Philadelphia Mint stands as a classic representative of American coinage from the era between the world wars. Strikingly preserved, this specimen has achieved a high grade of Mint State 65, indicating a well-preserved surface that showcases the original artistry of the series in excellent detail. The obverse features a powerful profile of a Native American, facing right, with the word LIBERTY clearly inscribed along the upper right edge. The date 1935 is crisply struck at the lower left of the portrait. This design captures a rugged, naturalistic aesthetic that departed significantly from the more traditional, allegorical figures of liberty on earlier American coins. On the reverse, a majestic bison stands on a raised mound, filling the center of the coin. Above the animal, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is visible, while the denomination FIVE CENTS is positioned below the mound. Because this coin was struck at the main Philadelphia facility, it bears no mint mark, leaving the space below the denomination clean and empty.
