The 1935 Buffalo Nickel, struck at the Denver Mint, stands as a classic representative of twentieth-century American coinage. This five-cent piece, graded in Almost Uncirculated condition, retains much of the original luster and crisp detail from its initial production. The design captures a distinctively American aesthetic, moving away from traditional neoclassical allegories to celebrate the natural and cultural heritage of the continent. On the obverse, a powerful profile of a Native American faces right. The simple inscription LIBERTY is placed along the upper right rim, with the year 1935 positioned clearly at the lower left. Designer James Earle Fraser combined the features of multiple individuals to create this composite portrait, resulting in a dignified and memorable representation. The reverse depicts a massive American bison, modeled after a famous animal named Black Diamond. The bison stands on a raised mound, symbolizing the western plains. The country of origin and the traditional motto are inscribed above the animal, while the face value FIVE CENTS is boldly displayed at the bottom, just below the mound where the Denver mint mark is located.
