The 1936 five-cent piece stands as a classic representative of mid-century American coinage. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, the design captures a powerful portrait of a Native American on the obverse, facing right. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed along the upper right edge, with the year 1936 clearly stamped at the base of the portrait. On the reverse, a massive American bison stands positioned on a raised mound. The legends on this side include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" positioned above the animal, while the denomination "FIVE CENTS" is placed below. This particular issue was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, which is indicated by the absence of any mint mark beneath the mound.
