In 1936, the United States Mint struck a special silver half dollar to mark the sesquicentennial of Columbia, South Carolina, as the state capital. This issue contains 0.3617 troy ounces of silver, with a total purity of 0.900. Only 9,007 of these coins were minted, making it a scarcer commemorative issue from the mid-century era. This particular specimen is certified in a remarkable state of preservation, graded as Mint State 66 (MS-66). The obverse design features a personification of Justice standing between two distinct state houses, representing the old and new capitals. The surrounding inscriptions reference the sesquicentennial celebration of the capital, spanning from 1786 to 1936. On the reverse, the coin displays the palmetto, the official state tree of South Carolina. The reverse also bears the traditional national inscriptions, including the denomination of half dollar.
