The 1936 Mercury Dime, struck at the Denver Mint, is a beautiful example of American coinage from the early twentieth century. Composed of 90 percent silver, this ten-cent piece contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. It represents a classic era of United States coinage where everyday currency was treated as a canvas for high art. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse of the coin features a youthful representation of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wings, a detail intended to symbolize freedom of thought. This distinctive headwear led to the popular, though technically incorrect, nickname of the Mercury Dime, as the public associated the wings with the Roman messenger god. The obverse also bears the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" alongside the 1936 date. On the reverse, the imagery shifts to a fasces, an ancient symbol consisting of a bundle of rods bound around an ax, which is closely intertwined with an olive branch. This combination represents both strength and the desire for peace. The reverse inscriptions include "ONE DIME" and the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM", alongside the "D" mint mark indicating its origin in Denver. This particular specimen is preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, showing only minor wear from its brief time in circulation.
