Struck by the United States Mint, this 1936 commemorative silver half dollar honors one of the most critical moments in American history, the Battle of Gettysburg. Fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863, during the American Civil War, the conflict is remembered here through a powerful artistic lens. This coin contains 0.3617 troy ounces of silver, with a total purity of 90 percent, and is preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition. The obverse of the coin features the conjoined busts of two soldiers, one representing the Confederacy and the other the Union. This dual portrait serves as a poignant reminder of the opposing forces that met on the Pennsylvania battlefield. The design is accompanied by inscriptions that emphasize unity and remembrance, including the words BLUE AND GRAY alongside the traditional mottoes IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the reverse, the theme of reconciliation is further explored. Two shields, representing the Union and the Confederacy, are positioned side by side, separated by a fasces, which symbolizes strength through unity. Designed by sculptor Frank Vittor, this issue had a limited mintage of only 26,928 pieces, making it a fascinating study in both historical commemoration and early twentieth-century American numismatic art.
