Struck in 90 percent silver, this 1936 commemorative half dollar marks the seventy fifth anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, which took place from July 1 to July 3, 1863, in Pennsylvania. The coin serves as a physical reminder of the pivotal American Civil War clash between Union and Confederate forces. This particular specimen is certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64), preserving the intricate details of its powerful design. The obverse of the coin presents the profiles of two soldiers, one from the Union and one from the Confederacy, facing side by side. This dual portrait is accompanied by inscriptions that include the words BLUE AND GRAY REUNION, along with the anniversary dates of 1863 and 1938, and the minting year of 1936. On the reverse, the design by Frank Vittor features two distinct shields representing the Union and the Confederacy. A fasces, a traditional symbol of authority and unity, divides the two shields.
