In 1936, the United States marked the sesquicentennial of Lynchburg, Virginia, with a commemorative silver half dollar. This coin stands out in American numismatics for its choice of obverse subject, featuring a portrait of Carter Glass. At the time of the coin's release, Glass was a sitting United States Senator from Virginia, making this one of the rare instances where a living person was depicted on official United States coinage. The reverse of the coin presents a symbolic figure of Liberty standing tall. Behind her, the design incorporates the historic Lynchburg courthouse, bridging the concepts of freedom and local heritage. Inscriptions on the coin include the dual dates of 1786 and 1936, marking the 150 year milestone, alongside traditional mottos such as IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
