The 10 cent denomination in 1936 presents one of the most celebrated designs in United States coinage history. Struck in 0.900 fine silver with a precious metal content of 0.0715 troy ounces, this piece is widely known as the Mercury Dime. The coin is preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, showcasing the original details of the engraving just as they emerged from the Philadelphia Mint. On the obverse, the design features a youthful representation of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wings, a detail intended to symbolize freedom of thought. The legend IN GOD WE TRUST appears alongside the date 1936. This distinctive winged headwear led to the popular, albeit technically incorrect, nickname of Mercury, the ancient Roman messenger god. The reverse of the coin displays a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an ax, which is closely intertwined with a leafy olive branch. This pairing represents both strength and a desire for peace. The inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DIME, completing a design created by Adolph Weinman that remains a favorite among historical coin enthusiasts.
