1936 Rhode Island Half Dollar BU

0.3617 troy oz .900 1936 Brilliant Unc

Struck in 90% silver, this 1936 half dollar was minted to mark the three hundredth anniversary of the founding of Providence, Rhode Island. Curiously, despite its commemorative purpose, the name of the city of Providence does not appear anywhere on the coin's inscriptions. The obverse design presents a dramatic historical vignette, showing Roger Williams standing in a canoe as he is greeted by a Native American on the shore. On the reverse, the coin displays a traditional anchor of Hope, accompanied by a shield and ornamental mantling, alongside the classic Latin motto meaning out of many, one.
