This silver half dollar from 1936 represents a distinctive moment in United States commemorative coinage. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal. With a remarkably small mintage of just 5,006 pieces, it is a scarce survivor from the pre World War II era. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Stephen Foster, the famous American composer. Surrounding the bust are inscriptions honoring him as America's troubadour, alongside the traditional national mottoes of trust and liberty. The design is the work of Constance Ortmayer, who brought a classical sensibility to this musical tribute. On the reverse, the musical theme continues with a stylized depiction of a woman playing a harp, symbolizing the spirit of song. The denomination is clearly marked as a half dollar, surrounded by the name of the issuing nation. This particular specimen has been certified in Mint State 64, preserving the fine details of Ortmayer's artistry just as it emerged from the minting press in 1936.
