1936-S Columbia Commemorative Half BU
In 1936, the San Francisco Mint produced a remarkably limited run of just 8,007 commemorative half dollars celebrating Columbia, South Carolina. Struck in 0.900 fine silver with a precious metal content of 0.3617 troy ounces, this coin stands as a fascinating artifact from the pre-World War II era of United States commemorative coinage. This particular specimen survives in brilliant uncirculated condition, preserving its original artistic details just as they emerged from the minting press. The obverse of the coin features a striking depiction of Justice, designed by A. Wolfe Davidson. Rather than wearing a traditional blindfold, this representation of Justice stands holding both a sword and a pair of scales. Surrounding the central figure are the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "COLUMBIA," alongside the dual commemorative dates. The San Francisco mint mark "S" is also present on this side, indicating its West Coast origin. On the reverse, the design showcases the palmetto tree, which serves as the official state emblem of South Carolina. The tree is flanked by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, and is accompanied by the inscriptions "SOUTH CAROLINA" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." The denomination is rendered as "HALF DOLLAR," while the traditional mottoes "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are also integrated into the design. This piece offers a compelling look at Southern regional pride captured in precious metal.
