This silver half dollar, minted in 1936 at the San Francisco Mint, commemorates the 300th anniversary of Rhode Island's founding. Struck in 0.900 fine silver with a precious metal content of 0.3617 troy ounces, the coin features a brilliant uncirculated finish that highlights its detailed, symbolic imagery. The obverse design depicts Roger Williams in a canoe, extending a hand of greeting to a Native American standing on the shore. This scene represents the historic arrival that led to the establishment of the settlement, although the name of Providence itself does not appear in the inscriptions. On the reverse, the central motif features the traditional Anchor of Hope, paired with a shield and decorative mantling.
