1937-D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel VF-35 PCGS

0.0000 troy oz 1937 Very Fine - 35 (PCGS)

The 1937 Buffalo nickel struck at the Denver Mint holds a special place in numismatic history due to a fascinating production error. While the obverse displays the classic, detailed profile of an American Indian head, the reverse features a dramatic anomaly. The American bison, typically depicted standing firmly on a raised mound, is missing its front right leg. This distinct three-legged variety was not an intentional design change, but rather the result of over-polishing the coin dies at the mint. In an effort to remove imperfections or clash marks from the metal, workers accidentally polished away the detail of the front leg entirely, creating one of the most famous and sought-after error coins in United States history. This particular specimen is certified in Very Fine 35 condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while still clearly displaying the dramatic missing limb. The reverse also features the denomination of five cents and the Denver mint mark, while the obverse bears the word Liberty and the 1937 date.
