1937-D 3-Legged Buffalo Nickel XF
The 1937 Denver Mint nickel features one of the most famous and intriguing design anomalies in American numismatics. While the obverse displays a classic, dignified profile of a Native American facing right with the word LIBERTY and the year, the reverse holds a fascinating surprise. On the reverse, an American bison stands atop a raised mound, but a minting anomaly left the animal with only three visible legs. The front leg of the bison appears to be missing entirely, a distinctive characteristic that makes this particular variety highly recognizable and studied. The reverse also bears the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination FIVE CENTS, alongside the D mint mark representing the Denver facility. This specific coin has been preserved in Extra Fine condition, showcasing the remarkable details of this celebrated design variation.
