1937 Mercury Dime AU
The 10-cent piece from 1937 is a striking example of American coinage from the era between the world wars. Minted in Philadelphia with a composition of 90 percent silver, this dime contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Known widely as the Mercury Dime, the coin displays a high level of artistic detail even in an Almost Uncirculated state, preserving the crispness of its original engraving. On the obverse, the design features a youthful personification of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a symbol that historically represents freedom of thought. This winged headgear led to the popular, though incorrect, nickname of the Roman messenger god Mercury. Surrounding this central figure is the classic national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," along with the 1937 date. The reverse side presents a powerful combination of symbols, showing a fasces, which is a bundle of rods bound around an ax, closely intertwined with an olive branch. This imagery represents both strength and a desire for peace. The inscriptions on this side include the issuing nation, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the traditional Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the denomination expressed as "ONE DIME."
