The coin's obverse showcases a detailed portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh, a key figure behind the early colonization attempts. Legible inscriptions on this side include the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST", and the name "SIR WALTER RALEIGH". On the reverse, the design shifts to a poignant family depiction, showing Eleanor Dare cradling her infant child, Virginia Dare, who was the first child of English parentage born in the Americas.
