1937-S Buffalo Nickel AU

0.0000 troy oz 1937 Almost Unc

The 1937-S Buffalo nickel represents a classic era of United States coinage, struck at the San Francisco Mint during the latter years of this celebrated series. This particular coin survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of its iconic, highly textured surfaces. On the obverse, a noble right-facing portrait of a Native American dominates the field, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the year 1937. The designer, James Earle Fraser, created this composite portrait to capture the spirit of America's original inhabitants. The reverse features a massive American bison, modeled after a famous animal named Black Diamond. The bison stands on a raised mound of dirt, with the denomination FIVE CENTS inscribed below. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is positioned above the animal's back, while the small S mint mark below the mound identifies its origin at the San Francisco facility, which produced a mintage of 5,635,000 of these nickels that year.
