1938-D Oregon Trail Commemorative Half Dollar MS-66 NGC

0.3617 troy oz .900 1938 MS-66 (NGC)

This 1938 silver half dollar, struck at the Denver Mint, represents a poignant artistic tribute to the pioneers who journeyed westward. The coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal. Certified in a superb state of preservation as Mint State 66, this piece stands as a remarkably preserved survivor from a commemorative series that spanned from 1926 to 1939. The visual narrative of the coin captures the spirit of American expansion. On the obverse, a classic Conestoga wagon pulled by oxen travels toward a setting sun, symbolizing the arduous trek across the continent. The reverse displays an indigenous figure holding a bow, positioned in front of a map of the United States. These detailed designs were created by the renowned artistic duo James Earle Fraser and Laura Gardin Fraser. The creation of this commemorative issue was authorized by Congress following advocacy by Ezra Meeker. Meeker had personal experience with the difficult journey, having traveled the actual Oregon Trail back in 1850. His efforts helped ensure that the memory of the pioneer route would be permanently preserved in United States coinage.
