1938 Mercury Dime Good/VF

0.0715 troy oz .900 1938 Good or Better

In 1938, the United States Mint produced a ten-cent piece that remains one of the most visually striking examples of American coinage. Struck in 90% silver, this dime contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. The coin represents a fascinating era of American design, showcasing the creative work of sculptor Adolph Weinman. While these circulated pieces may show signs of wear along their outer rims, the artistry of the original engraving remains clearly visible. The front of the coin features a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wings. This distinctive headgear, which historically symbolized freedom of thought, led to the coin's popular nickname, the Mercury Dime. Surrounding this central figure are the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST," alongside the 1938 year of issue. On the reverse, the design transitions to a powerful combination of symbols representing both strength and peace. A traditional Roman fasces, which is a bundle of rods bound around an ax, stands centrally to symbolize unity and force. Intertwined with the fasces is an olive branch, signaling a desire for peace. The inscriptions on this side include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the denomination "ONE DIME," and the Latin phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
