1940-D Mercury Dime BU
The 1940 Mercury dime struck at the Denver Mint represents a classic era of United States coinage. Struck in 90% silver, this ten-cent piece is celebrated for its elegant and symbolic imagery, which captured the spirit of a nation on the cusp of a pivotal decade. The preservation of this coin in Brilliant Uncirculated condition allows the fine details of the original engraving to shine through clearly. On the obverse, a youthful depiction of Lady Liberty wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wings. This distinctive headgear, which led the public to nickname the design the Mercury dime due to its resemblance to the Roman messenger god, was intended to symbolize freedom of thought. The legend "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date "1940" are clearly visible on this side. The reverse side displays a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an ax, which is closely intertwined with an olive branch. This combination represents both the strength of the nation and its desire for peace. The inscriptions on the reverse include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "ONE DIME", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and the small "D" mint mark, indicating its origin at the Denver facility.
