1940-D Mercury Dime XF
Struck at the Denver Mint during a pivotal moment in the mid-twentieth century, this ten-cent piece is a beautiful example of American coinage. Minted in 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Its condition is preserved in Extra Fine detail, allowing observers to appreciate the fine artistry of its engraving. The obverse of the coin displays a youthful personification of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a design element that historically led the public to mistake her for the Roman messenger god Mercury. Alongside her portrait, the classic inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year "1940" are clearly visible. On the reverse, the design presents a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an axe, paired with an olive branch. This combination represents strength and peace. The traditional Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is also inscribed on this side, completing a design that remains one of the most celebrated in United States numismatic history.
