1940 Mercury Dime Good/VF

0.0715 troy oz .900 1940 Good or Better

In 1940, the United States Mint produced a ten-cent piece that remains one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatics. Popularly known as the Mercury Dime, this coin actually depicts a youthful personification of Liberty on its obverse. She wears a winged Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom of thought, which early observers frequently mistook for the Roman messenger god, Mercury. The obverse also bears the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" alongside the 1940 date. Crafted from 90 percent silver, each coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. The reverse design presents a striking contrast of themes, displaying a traditional Roman fasces wrapped with an olive branch. This imagery represents both strength and a desire for peace. The reverse inscriptions read "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DIME," and the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." This particular issue was designed by Adolph Weinman and struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Surviving today in Good or better condition, these circulating pieces of silver carry the physical wear of an era on the cusp of global change, offering a tangible connection to the early decades of twentieth-century America.
