1940 Mercury Dime XF

The 1940 ten cent piece stands as a compelling example of twentieth century American coinage. Struck in Philadelphia, this coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. Preserved in Extra Fine condition, it allows observers to appreciate the intricate details of its classic engraving, which was originally created by the artist Adolph Weinman. The front of the coin displays a youthful representation of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wings. This distinctive headwear often led to the popular, though technically incorrect, nickname of the Mercury Dime. Accompanying this portrait are the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date "1940". On the reverse, the design presents a fasces, which is a traditional bundle of wooden rods bound together with an axe blade emerging from the side. An olive branch is delicately intertwined with the fasces, contrasting the symbols of strength and peace. The back also bears the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "ONE DIME", and the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM".
