The 1940 ten-cent piece struck at the San Francisco Mint represents a classic era of United States silver coinage. Composed of 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.0715 troy ounces, this coin is a remarkable survivor from the decade of the Second World War. Out of a mintage of 21,560,000 pieces, very few have retained their original luster and detail to the level seen here. This particular specimen has earned a certified grade of Mint State 65 (MS-65) with the Full Bands designation. This designation indicates that the horizontal bands wrapping the fasces on the reverse are completely split and distinct, a sign of an exceptionally strong strike. The reverse also features the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM alongside the S mint mark, denoting its origin at the San Francisco facility.
