Struck during the mid-century era, the 1940-S Walking Liberty half dollar is a classic example of American silver coinage. Minted in San Francisco, this fifty-cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of the precious metal. It remains a celebrated design from a transformative period in United States coinage. The obverse of the coin displays a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty moving gracefully toward the horizon and a rising sun. She carries a bundle of branches in her arms, symbolizing strength and peace. The inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date "1940" are clearly visible on this face. On the reverse, a majestic eagle is perched upon a rugged mountain crag, wings partially spread as if preparing to take flight. The words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR" frame the scene, alongside the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." This specimen, graded in Very Good to Very Fine condition, showcases the artistry of designer Adolph Weinman, whose initials also appear on the coin.
